Join us for a morning of birding the foothills of the coastal range as Putah Creek winds through it! We will start our morning at Lake Solano County, an open oak woodland next to a river just west of Winters. We will be keeping an eye out for chaparral species, including Wrentit, Phainopepla, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. We will be scanning the shoreline of the lake for shorebirds, such as Spotted Sandpiper, and the edge of the reeds for Sora. Roosting in canyon walls, Great Horned Owls may be present, and in the thicker wooded areas, a multitude of woodpecker species are possible, including Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, and even sometimes a Pileated Woodpecker. Lewis’s Woodpecker, Osprey, are also possibilities. Join us for an extra hour of birding just a bit west to the Putah Creek Fishing accesses! These spots are good for early winter waterfowl, as well as birds whose ranges extend to the start of the coastal range, including American Dipper, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Golden Eagle and sometimes Pacific Wren.
