Young Birders Club Field Trip: Staten Island Road

Field Trip Leader: Mackenzie Hollender, sacaudubonyoungbirders@gmail.com
Supervisor: Kevin Hollender

This is a Young Birders Club field trip. Participation is limited to members of the Sacramento Valley Young Birders Club. Registration is through the young birders club Slack. Please go to www.sacramentoaudubon.org/young-birders-club to become a member.

Staten Island road is a road along the farm fields in the delta in San Joaquin County. This stretch of land is extremely popular in the birding community because it is a roosting site for thousands of Sandhill Cranes in the fall and winter. Join us as we watch cranes descend into the roadside fields by the hundreds amid a beautiful sunset. Along with these spectacular cranes, we expect to see a multitude of other delta dwelling birds, including a big variety of ducks and geese, including the less common Cackling Goose, as well as Tundra Swans.  We can expect to see other shorebirds such as Dunlin, Long-billed Dowitcher and Greater Yellowlegs. As the evening advances, our chances of seeing a Great Horned Owl rise. The road is too long to travel entirely on foot, so be prepared for some driving. Bring your cameras, as we will get some excellent golden hour bird photo opportunities!
