Sacramento Valley Conservancy works hard to provide quality habitat for wildlife by protecting land from development, restoration work and habitat enhancements. Our Tri-colored Blackbird and Burrowing Owl enhancement efforts are in need of a bit of TLC and we could use your help! Come learn more about these two charismatic species and help SVC maintain the habitat improvements that help them survive.
Tri-Colored Blackbird (Trike) Habitat Maintenance at the Barn Pond:
Excavating and contouring a “moat” around the perimeter of the pond. This will increase water storage and protect a nesting colony from predators.
Reducing thatch to promote new growth; clearing out last year’s dead stand of cattails. This makes space for new healthy growth.
Reseeding the center of the pond with fresh cattails. Trikes look for healthy stands of cattails when choosing a place to nest.
Burrowing Owl Artificial Den Cleanout:
Dig up and clear out 6 artificial burrowing owl dens.
Document any sign of use
Address any drainage issue
Repair or replace any damaged materials
Due to the location of the service day activities, high clearance vehicles are necessary. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a pair of gloves, comfortable hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, ample water, and high-calorie foods.
