Join us for a morning of birding along the American River. The Nimbus Fish Hatchery attracts an interesting mix of winter visitors to the river and surrounding oak bluffs. We will bird the open water on the river for Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, and the less common Barrow’s Goldeneye. Along the rocky shoreline of the river, a plethora of gulls are possible, including Glaucous-winged, Iceland, and American Herring Gulls. Spotted Sandpiper, and various egrets and herons are expected. In the high hills across from the river, raptors such as Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, Osprey, and Red-tailed Hawk are possible. We will move into an open oak woodland where we will look for Fox Sparrow, California Quail, Acorn Woodpecker, Oak Titmouse, wrens, sparrows, nuthatches, and other woodland passerines. Overall, we will have a well-rounded, diverse morning.
