The Cosumnes River Preserve is one of the most well known birding sites in the valley. Famous for its incredible views of thriving wetlands as well as mature oak woodland, one can see up to 80 species here in a given day during fall and winter. On this morning, we will start by birding the wetlands, where hundreds of all three types of teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, and Greater White-fronted Goose will be yards from us. Wilson’s Snipe, Long-billed Dowitcher, and Dunlin are all shorebirds we expect to see. The magnificent Sandhill Cranes will be in these wetlands as well, and there is always a chance of seeing a Sora or Virginia Rail in the cattails. After birding the wetlands, we take a walk through the woods towards a secluded mature oak site along a slough, where birds like Golden-crowned Kinglet, Fox Sparrow, Varied Thrush, Townsend’s Warbler, Wrentit, and even Great Horned Owl can all be found. We will have a very exciting day!
