Young Birders Club Field Trip: Folsom Lake SRA- Folsom Point

Field Trip Leader: Mackenzie Hollender, sacaudubonyoungbirders@gmail.com
Supervisor: Kevin Hollender

This is a Young Birders Club field trip. Participation is limited to members of the Sacramento Valley Young Birders Club. Registration is through the Young Birders Club Slack. Please go to www.sacramentoaudubon.org/young-birders-club to become a member.

Join us for a morning of birding at one of the most birdy spots along a well-known lake that borders the northeastern edge of Sacramento County. The wide, expansive lake provides rich habitat for a variety of open water birds, such as Western, Clark’s, Eared, and the less common Horned Grebes. Common Loons also frequent the lake, a signature of the lake’s high water quality. Bald Eagles and Osprey are also quite common around the lake. As well as scoping the lake for open water birds, we will be exploring the rolling oak woodland and rocky granite areas adjacent to the lake. Notable birds that occupy these habitats are Lark Sparrow, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, sometimes Chipping Sparrow, Oak Titmouse, Bewick’s Wren, and Rock Wren. The Rock Wren will be a main target for this trip, as the granite areas along Folsom lake are the best places to see Rock Wren in the Sacramento Valley. There will be restrooms at the site. Note that it does cost $12.00 to enter the park. Overall, we expect to accumulate a diverse list of all types of birds in a beautiful water-and-woods natural area.

Directions and confirmation of exact meeting location and time will be provided upon registration.
