Join us for a morning of birding in a thick deciduous woodland surrounding a tranquil creek. We will be looking for neotropical migrants passing through the central valley on their way back down from their northerly breeding grounds. Warblers are far more abundant at this spot in the fall, and we expect to see many Yellow Warbler, along with Wilson’s Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Townsend’s Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, and even a MacGillivray’s Warbler. We will also be keeping an eye out for Western Tanager, Wood Duck, Swainson’s Hawk, and other riparian species. The Putah Creek Riparian Reserve is one of the best locations in the valley to see the uncommon Willow Flycatcher passing through during fall migration, and we will keep a keen eye out for this bird. During migration season there is a heightened chance of rarities, especially at a spot with quality habitat, for birds blown off course. Past fall migrations at Putah Creek have turned up Summer Tanager, Northern Parula, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, American Redstart, and other surprises. We recommend packing snacks, water, sunscreen and a hat. There will be no restrooms.
