Young Birders Club Field Trip: Migratory Shorebird Day

Field Trip Leader: Mackenzie Hollender, sacaudubonyoungbirders@gmail.com
Supervisor: Kevin Hollender

This is a Young Birders Club field trip. Participation is limited to members of the Sacramento Valley Young Birders Club. Registration is through the young birders club Slack. Please go to www.sacramentoaudubon.org/young-birders-club to become a member.

Every late summer, thousands of shorebirds, small brown or gray birds with a slender, upright appearance, migrate through the valley's seasonal, permanent, and pop-up wetlands. Join us as we travel to one or more wetland locations where the best shorebird activity for this shorebird season has been determined. The best spots to see migrating shorebirds shifts from year to year, sometimes season to season, due to water levels, changes in the landscape, and how productive the breeding season for each species was. Possible sites include the Yolo Bypass, Cosumnes River Preserve, Yolo County Roads 103 and 104, Davis Wetlands, or something else entirely. The locations we will be visiting on this trip will be finalized closer to the date of the trip.

Our main target species will be Pectoral Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Semipalmated Plover, Wilson's and Red-necked Phalarope, and of course, anything rarer that may show up. Come and learn the different families of our shorebirds, and key traits to help tell them apart! Come learn about why the seasonally flooded wetlands in the central valley are so important to shorebirds in decline, and how farmers in the valley have partnered with local bird minded organizations to provide habitat for shorebirds.
