SAS Field Trip: Donner Summit, Family Friendly

Registration is NOT required for this field trip.

Field Trip Leader: Peter Perrine

To recover from the noise and confusion of the Fourth of July, join Peter for a quiet, slow walk through the conifers and riparian habitat at Donner Summit.  We will look and listen for the usual mountain specialties such as woodpeckers, Red-breasted Nuthatches and warblers, with the hope of finding more unusual species like Red Crossbills, Pine Grosbeaks or Varied Thrushes. This trip would be good for all levels of birding expertise, and families are welcome. The trip should not be longer than three miles of hiking on fairly level trails.  Bring water and snacks, and be prepared for mosquitoes.

Meeting Location: We will meet at 8:00 AM at the Donner Summit Pacific Crest Trail/SNO Park trailhead (39.33989644125325, -120.34356424367685), just off Highway 80.

Directions: The Trailhead is about an hour and a half’s drive from Sacramento, or 15 minutes from Truckee.  From Sacramento, drive Highway 80 eastbound and take the exit for Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Road.  Turn right then an immediate left toward the Pacific Crest Trailhead/Snopark. From the Truckee area, take Highway 80 west to just past the rest area on Donner Summit, take the Castle Peak Boreal Ridge Road exit, turn left, drive under the freeway and turn left toward the Pacific Crest Trailhead/Snopark.  Follow this frontage road east to its end at the trailhead.  There is a restroom at the trailhead, but no drinking water.
