Sacramento Valley Conservancy: Speaker Series

This is a Sacramento Valley Conservancy event. Registration is required.

Sacramento Heron and Egret Rescue

Guest Speaker: Christy Berger, co-Founder and co-Director

Get a behind the scenes look at the inspiring work of Sacramento Heron and Egret Rescue (SHER), an all-volunteer team dedicated to protecting herons, egrets, and other wild birds nesting in urban and suburban areas. Drawing on real rescue stories from local colonies, Christy will highlight how volunteers respond to human-wildlife conflict, care for injured and orphaned birds, and advocate for coexistence and habitat preservation in the Sacramento region. Attendees will learn about the natural history of several local species of herons and egrets, SHER’s rescue efforts and why they are important, wildlife rehabilitation, and ways that we can all help wildlife survive in the human-dominated environment.

Christy Berger is the co-Founder and co-Director (volunteer) of Sacramento Heron and Egret Rescue. She is a UC Certified California Naturalist, a wildlife rehabilitator, and also volunteers with Gold Country Wildlife Rescue. Christy also rescues lost and injured domestic pigeons, and her favorite bird is the American Crow.

Sacramento Heron and Egret Rescue (SHER) is an all-volunteer wild bird rescue team focused on helping injured, sick and orphaned baby herons and egrets (and other wild birds) born in urban and suburban environments. Every day during nesting season, SHER volunteers monitor three large heron and egret nesting colonies in the Sacramento and Elk Grove located in areas with a high level of human-wildlife conflict. Volunteers rescue hundreds of injured and orphaned young birds each year, bringing baby birds in need of help to a wildlife rescue facility. We also work to educate the public, and advocate for coexistence and preservation of habitat.
