Our Chapter

Sacramento Audubon Society is a volunteer run organization. Through extensive educational programs, ongoing community outreach, land stewardship, and scientific-based conservation efforts, our volunteers seek to effect positive change in our community and work towards preserving our region’s biodiversity for future generations. We offer several expert-led birding field trips per month. All levels of birders (and non-birders) are welcome.

Our Location

The Sacramento region is a birder’s paradise situated along the Pacific Flyway, a north-south bird migration route extending from Arctic tundra to South American wetlands. With the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and its foothills to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to the south, and the Sacramento, American and Cosumnes Rivers coursing through greater Sacramento, it is no surprise that over 400 bird species can be found here.

Our Mission

The mission of the Sacramento Audubon Society is to:

  • Promote the protection and scientific study of wild birds.

  • Foster the enjoyment and appreciation of wild birds through community outreach.

  • Encourage, support, and provide environmental educational opportunities.

  • Advocate for the conservation of open space in the Sacramento region.

Our History

Sacramento Audubon Society has been active since 1950. For an illuminating summary of those early years you can read: “The First 25 Years from 1950-1975.” To learn more about the growth of our organization continue with: “The Second 25 Years from 1975-2000.” The reports give the reader a snapshot of the Society’s formation, issues, challenges and achievements. The Society was incorporated on March 12, 1963 as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization and has been a member of National Audubon Society since our incorporation.
