Mustang Airport Appeal
WHEN: April 14th, 2010 6PM
WHERE: County Administration Center, Board of Supervisors Chambers 700 H Street, Sacramento
WHAT IS AT STAKE?
The Cosumnes River preserve is directly threatened by the proposed expansion of the Mustang Airport from a single user privately owned airstrip to a privately owned general aviation airport with 100 hangars and 25 tie-downs. Any bird strikes associated with this newly expanded facility could result in birds being killed on the Preserve, wetlands being filled on the Preserve, and trees being felled on the Preserve.
Background
On February 22, 2010, the Sacramento County Planning Commission approved the Mustang Airport Use Permit, despite County staff’s recommendation to deny it. The Planning Commissions decision was based on inaccurate and incomplete information and analysis. This decision has been appealed and the appellants are requesting that the County Board of Supervisors refuse to certify the EIR and deny the Use Permit for the proposed expansion for the privately owned, general aviation airport for the following reasons:
- The project is inconsistent with applicable state and local laws, ordinances regulations;
- The project is inconsistent with habitat lands surrounding the proposed site;
- Wildlife habitat surrounding the project attracts large concentrations of birds and other animals that are a known hazard to pilots and their aircraft;
- The Project, surrounded on three sides by Cosumnes River Preserve, is incompatible with the resource protection and restoration objectives of this regionally significant preserve;
- Less than one mile from the proposed landing strip, there is a great blue heron, great egret, and double crested cormorant rookery, known to host approximately 139 active nests as of march 2010;
- The project jeopardizes continued conservation efforts on surrounding Preserve lands;
- Sacramento Area Council of Government’s (SACOG) airport land use compatibility policies acknowledge the incompatibility of the proposed airport and the Cosumnes River preserve;
- The Project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has significant substantive and procedural problems which have not been adequately addressed.
