What's this bird?

Identifying a bird can be sometimes quite complicated if the description is incomplete or a picture is not clear because many birds look similar. Additionally, males and females can have different plumages  and breeding plumage can be quite different than non-breeding plumage.

Some common birds in Sacramento are shown below.  Additional photos of these birds as well as all the birds in the official Sacramento Area List are shown in the Gallery.

We suggest that you subscribe to the Sacramento Birds Yahoo Group where local birding experts can help with identification.  Send a blank email to sacramento_birds-subscribe@yahoogroups.com .   After you get a confirmation of your subscription, you may post your questions and photos to the Group at sacramento_birds@yahoogroups.com

You can also use whatbird.com or this link or any of the Birding Links on the links page for help in identifying birds.  But be aware that there are many mis-identified photos on the internet that show up if you search on  a species name.
